Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey has taken to his Twitter to announce that Twitter is prepared to recruit a team of five people to work on creating a decentralized standard for social media. According to the CEO, if this team is successful, Twitter could eventually use this decentralized standard.

He said:

“Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard.”

In subsequent tweets, Dorsey explains that he and the Twitter team were initially quite open to the idea of creating a “decentralized internet standard” but decided to make other decisions which saw Twitter eventually being centralized. However, things have changed since then, prompting the team to be a bit more inclined to go the decentralized way.

Dorsey says that a few problems are being faced by centralized solutions such as “centralized enforcement of global policy to address abuse and misleading information” as well as social media gradually transforming into “recommendation algorithms” as opposed to content hosting and removal.

He then says that this decision was also informed by the fact that a decentralized method is now a lot more possible because there are new technologies that will make this easy.

The CEO recently completed a tour of Africa visiting Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia and South Africa, a trip which made him declare Africa as the future of Bitcoin.
