Grammy-nominated singer, music producer and songwriter Akon has announced a final agreement for building his own futuristic Akon City in Senegal. The elated singer made the announcement on Twitter on Monday, Jan. 13.

Akon city will be built on 2000 acres of land located in the Mbodiene village in Senegal. The land is only five minutes away from Senegal’s new international airport close to Dakar and was a gift to the artiste from Senegalese President Macky Sall in 2018.

The first phase of the city erection started in March 2019 and the second phase is set to start in 2025. The city will take 10 years to build. Also, it is estimated that Akon city, upon completion, will have gulped $2 billion. Akoin city will also be the first certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified city in Senegal. It will be fully powered by renewable energy.

Trades in Akon City will be run exclusively using his soon-to-be-released digital currency, the Akoin. First announced in 2018, Akoin will be the sole medium of exchange in Akoin city when it’s done.

Akon seems to be a lot more focused on entrepreneurship than his music. In 2014, he launched the Akon Lighting Africa project to provide electricity to millions of Africans.
